Chapter 19 All Shapes and Sizes

Peter waved at someone behind me to come closer but I didn’t pay attention to who or why.

Reg leaned forward across the table and said, “Excuse me?”

I sighed and said, “You are a hypocrite. First of all, you tell me to listen to you, someone I have just met, over Faye, someone I know and trust.”

He demanded, “And how is that hypocritical?”

I said, “That’s the first way. You are telling me to be my own man and not let someone else make me their student. If I do, don’t I become your student and disciple? You see, I choose to listen to Faye. You demand that I listen to you. What kind of fool trades a mentor who wants to help me accomplish my own goals, not theirs, for a tyrannical parent figure who knows what’s best for me and will tell me exactly what to do with my life and who my friends will be? Do you read?”

Reg said, “Read? Books? No!”

I said, “It’s not important.”

Reg said, “So that’s it? You won’t listen to me at all?”

I said, “That’s not it. I haven’t answered your question. You are a hypocrite.”

He said, “You said that.”

I said, “But I only told you a small part of the reason. Here’s the other part. You pretend to know what’s best for me. You warn me that Faye is somehow going to harm me if I let her. But this isn’t about me, or my welfare, or who I spend my time with. This isn’t about Faye and how she lives her life or what she does. But you act like those are exactly what this is about.”

I paused for him to ask, “And what is this about then?”

I said, “You. This is about you. You are terrified of Faye. But more than that, you are afraid of me. Not for me–of me. I don’t know why you would be. But to you, if I think for myself, somehow that threatens you. Because Faye thinks for herself, it threatens you. Has Faye done something to you by talking to me? Have I? You are free-minded and yet want me to let you do my thinking for me. Isn’t that the definition of a hypocrite?”

The young single woman who was with Reg, said quietly, “You know what? I just remembered, I need to make a correction with the card I gave you. Can I have it back for a moment?”

Reg’s wife handed the girl’s card back to her and said, “It was I pleasure to meet you. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.”

The girl started to walk away and Reg called out, “Hey, I thought you were coming home with us?”

She didn’t stop walking.

Reg’s wife stood up and said, “Peter, may I use your study and a computer for a minute?”

Peter said, “Ask Audrey to take you. I’ll invite you to the next Mixer. If you come, it’s up to you.”

Reg said, “Where are you going?”

The woman said, “To register as a divorcee.
